Actor Lekha Washington has clarified why she and her partner, actor Imran Khan, visited a police station after several people in their circle were detained. Addressing speculation surrounding their appearance, Lekha said they had gone to enquire about their friends and denied that the visit was connected to any gathering.
Her clarification comes amid online discussion about the incident and the presence of the couple at the police station. The explanation shifts the focus from speculation about their involvement to their stated reason for being there: finding out what had happened to people they knew.
Lekha’s comments also seek to distinguish the visit from claims that the pair had attended or organised a gathering linked to the detention. She maintained that their purpose was to check on their friends rather than participate in any event.
What Happened at August Kranti Maidan?
The incident took place on October 10 at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan, where police had put security arrangements in place ahead of a planned demonstration. Lekha said she arrived in the area at around 5 pm with Imran, his mother Nuzhat Khan, his cousin Zayn Marie Khan and others.
According to her account, they went there to find out about friends who had already been detained. She said there was no gathering taking place when they arrived and stressed that the group was present as individuals rather than representing an organisation.
The clarification comes after photographs and videos of Imran, Lekha and Zayn being taken into police custody circulated online. The three were detained during the police action and were released several hours later.
Detention Followed a Wider Protest Crackdown
The police action in Mumbai was connected to demonstrations organised in support of a protest called by the Cockroach Janata Party. The wider campaign called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with concerns about electoral rolls and voter registration among the issues raised by organisers.
Authorities moved to prevent unauthorised gatherings at several locations, and hundreds of people were reportedly detained in Mumbai. Similar restrictions and detentions were reported in Delhi, where a demonstration had also been planned.
Imran had previously indicated that his presence was as a citizen rather than as a representative of a political organisation. The episode prompted discussion about the handling of demonstrators and the treatment of people detained during the police operation.
Lekha’s latest explanation adds her account of why the group went to August Kranti Maidan, while distinguishing their stated intention from assumptions circulating online.
Lekha Says the Group Wanted to Check on Friends
By explaining that the visit was intended to establish what had happened to their detained friends, Lekha has sought to correct the impression that the group had gathered to organise or participate in a separate event.
Her comments also bring attention to the uncertainty surrounding the incident, as images of the actors being taken away by police spread before the circumstances were fully explained.
The couple and their companions have since been released. Lekha’s statement provides their account of the visit, although it does not settle broader questions about the police operation or the circumstances in which individuals were detained.
For Imran and Lekha, the immediate priority appears to be clarifying their presence at the site. The incident has nevertheless placed the actors in the middle of a wider debate over public demonstrations, police restrictions and the rights of citizens to express their views.
