Indian boxing legend Mary Kom has expressed disappointment with the 2014 biographical film based on her life, saying it portrayed only a small fraction of the hardships and sacrifices behind her sporting career. Following her eviction from Bigg Boss 20, the Olympic medallist reflected on her journey, the challenges of participating in the reality show and why she believes her story was not fully represented on screen.
The film Mary Kom, starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead role, introduced the boxer’s inspiring journey to a wider audience. However, Mary Kom has now said that the movie did not accurately capture several aspects of her real-life experiences.
Mary Kom Says the Film Missed Most of Her Struggles
Discussing the biopic, Mary Kom said that only around 10 per cent of her hard work and struggles were represented in the film. According to the boxer, audiences would gain a fuller understanding of her journey by reading her autobiography, Unbreakable.
She also indicated that certain portions of the movie did not reflect her life accurately. While the film depicted important milestones in her boxing career, she believes the challenges behind those achievements were far more extensive than what viewers saw.
Mary Kom’s comments highlight the difficulty of translating a long and complex sporting career into a feature-length movie. An athlete’s journey involves years of preparation, setbacks, personal sacrifices and determination, much of which can be difficult to include in a cinematic narrative.
The 2014 film starred Priyanka Chopra as the boxer and brought attention to Mary Kom’s rise in international boxing. Despite the film’s role in popularising her story, the athlete’s recent remarks make clear that she feels her complete experience remains largely untold.
Why Mary Kom Does Not Want a Sequel
Mary Kom also ruled out the possibility of a sequel to the biopic. She said her career and journey had already been covered through the film and her book, suggesting that another instalment was unnecessary at this stage.
Her comments indicate that she would rather allow people to explore the fuller account of her life through the experiences and achievements she has already documented.
The boxer also spoke about her hopes for the future, expressing a desire for a smoother and happier period in her personal life. Her remarks came as renewed public interest followed her appearance on Bigg Boss 20.
Mary Kom Reflects on Her Bigg Boss 20 Experience
Mary Kom’s seven-week stay on Bigg Boss 20 ended after filmmaker Rohit Shetty announced her eviction during the Weekend Ka Vaar episode. She had entered the show hoping to give viewers a better understanding of her personality beyond her achievements in the boxing ring.
The champion said she wanted people to see her not only as an athlete but also as a mother and an ordinary person with interests and responsibilities outside sport. She also hoped to challenge assumptions about what she could do in everyday life.
Although she described the experience as valuable, Mary Kom acknowledged that the reality show's format presented challenges. She said she sometimes felt disrespected and found it difficult to communicate her intentions because her Hindi and grammar were not always strong enough to express what she wanted to say.
She also explained that she had not expected the level of strategic gameplay, disagreements and manipulation that can form part of reality television. Rather than engaging in unnecessary confrontations, she generally preferred to stay away from conflict.
A Sporting Legacy Beyond the Screen
Mary Kom is among India’s most accomplished boxers. She won six World Boxing Championship titles and secured a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Her achievements made her one of the country’s most recognisable sporting figures and an inspiration to aspiring athletes.
Her recent comments underline the difference between a film adaptation and an athlete’s full personal history. While the biopic introduced her achievements to a broad audience, Mary Kom believes the sacrifices and difficulties behind her success deserve greater recognition.
