Opposition leaders have renewed calls for accountability in the Ankita Bhandari case, supporting the Uttarakhand woman’s family and questioning the political implications of a recent appointment involving a BJP leader. The renewed debate comes nearly four years after Ankita’s death, with her family continuing to seek justice and answers surrounding the case.
The controversy has once again drawn attention to demands for transparency, accountability and a thorough examination of allegations raised by the victim’s family. Opposition parties have used the issue to question the ruling establishment’s handling of concerns connected to the case.
Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old receptionist at a resort in Uttarakhand, was found dead in September 2022. The case triggered widespread public anger and protests across the state, with demonstrators demanding strict punishment for those responsible.
The family has objected to the appointment of Dushyant Kumar Gautam as Sikkim Governor, arguing that the decision should be reconsidered until the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) completes its examination of the alleged VIP connection to the murder. Ankita’s parents have appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to intervene and have sought an opportunity to present their concerns directly.
Gautam has not been named as an accused in the murder case, and allegations against him remain unproven. The controversy centres on the family’s demand for a comprehensive investigation into whether an influential individual was connected to the circumstances surrounding Ankita’s death.
Congress Leaders Join the Family’s Protest in Delhi
On October 14, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met Ankita’s parents during their sit-in protest near India Gate in New Delhi. Their presence brought renewed national attention to the family’s demands and intensified political criticism surrounding the appointment.
Rahul Gandhi expressed solidarity with the family and argued that their concerns should be addressed before the appointment proceeds. Other opposition leaders also voiced support for the demand for transparency and accountability.
The family has maintained that the investigation must examine all relevant evidence and address questions surrounding the alleged VIP connection. Their protest reflects continuing dissatisfaction with the progress of the inquiry, despite convictions already secured against the principal defendants.
Convictions Have Not Ended Questions About the Case
Ankita worked at a resort in Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district. Resort owner Pulkit Arya and two employees were convicted in connection with her murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
However, her parents have continued to press for answers about whether anyone else was involved. The alleged VIP connection has remained a contentious issue, prompting renewed demands for further scrutiny.
The latest political confrontation highlights the difference between the convictions already secured and the additional questions the family wants investigators to address. While opposition leaders have made the matter a focus of criticism against the BJP, the allegations surrounding any additional involvement must be established through evidence and the investigative process.
For Ankita’s family, the central demand remains that every relevant aspect of the case be examined fairly and transparently. The dispute over the gubernatorial appointment has brought those demands back into the national spotlight, placing renewed pressure on authorities to address the outstanding questions.
