From Toowoomba to the UFC Main Event: Tom Nolan's Journey to the Biggest Fight of His Career

Australian mixed martial artist Tom Nolan is preparing for the biggest opportunity of his professional career as he headlines a UFC event against experienced lightweight Renato Moicano. The 26-year-old fighter from Toowoomba, Queensland, has progressed from a regional sporting background to the spotlight of one of the world's leading mixed martial arts promotions.

Known by his nickname, “Big Train”, Nolan's journey reflects years of dedication, competitive experience and a determination to establish himself among the leading fighters in the lightweight division.

From Rugby League to Mixed Martial Arts

Nolan's sporting journey did not begin with a clear plan to become a professional fighter. He initially played rugby league, representing the Toowoomba Clydesdales as a backrower.

His introduction to wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu came through a practical interest in improving his defensive skills on the rugby field. Over time, however, training developed into a deeper passion for mixed martial arts.

He continued developing his skills and eventually moved towards professional competition. His performances attracted attention during Dana White's Contender Series, where he secured a contract with the UFC after an impressive first-round knockout of Bogdan Grad.

The achievement marked a major turning point, giving the young Australian an opportunity to compete at the highest level of the sport.

Overcoming a Difficult UFC Debut

Nolan's first UFC appearance did not go according to plan. He suffered a first-round technical knockout defeat against Nikolas Motta, recording the first professional loss of his career.

Rather than allowing the setback to define his progress, he returned to competition and rebuilt his momentum.

A first-round stoppage victory over Victor Martinez helped him return to winning form. He subsequently continued improving through a series of performances that strengthened his position in the lightweight division.

His most significant recent result came against Fares Ziam in June 2026. Nolan secured a unanimous decision victory, helping him break into the UFC lightweight rankings.

By the time his first main-event opportunity arrived, he had established a five-fight winning run following his debut defeat.

A New Training Environment in Auckland

Another important development in Nolan's career has been his move to Auckland, New Zealand, to train at City Kickboxing under coach Eugene Bareman.

The change gave him access to a larger training environment, experienced coaches and numerous fighters competing at the UFC level.

Nolan has described the preparation period as the best training camp of his career. Working alongside high-level athletes has provided opportunities to improve different aspects of his game and prepare for the demands of a five-round contest.

He has also spoken about the importance of sports psychology. Nolan believes that developing a calmer mindset and relying on repeated training can help him react naturally rather than overthink situations during competition.

Facing a Fighter He Admired Growing Up

Nolan's first headlining assignment brings him against Brazilian veteran Renato Moicano, a fighter he followed long before entering the UFC.

Moicano has extensive experience against established names in the featherweight and lightweight divisions. His Brazilian jiu-jitsu background and submission record make him a challenging opponent for rising competitors.

For Nolan, the matchup carries personal significance because he grew up watching Moicano compete. However, the Australian has made it clear that admiration will not change his competitive approach.

The fight is scheduled for October 31, 2026, at Meta APEX in Las Vegas as part of UFC Fight Night: Moicano vs. Nolan.

An Opportunity to Inspire Others

Beyond the sporting result, Nolan sees his first main event as an opportunity to represent his hometown and encourage people from smaller communities to pursue their ambitions.

He has spoken about wanting to demonstrate that a person's background does not have to determine their future. His message centres on finding a passion, committing to it and remaining consistent through setbacks.

From his early rugby league days in Toowoomba to a UFC main event in Las Vegas, Nolan's career has involved several major transitions. The upcoming contest against Moicano represents another important stage in that journey and an opportunity to test how far his progress can take him.
