Defence Minister Rajnath Singh honoured athletes from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force in New Delhi after they delivered their strongest-ever performance at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. The Services contingent secured 27 medals, including six gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze, making a significant contribution to India’s overall performance at the continental sporting event.
A total of 92 athletes from the three armed services competed across 19 disciplines. Their achievements accounted for nearly one-third of India’s 85-medal tally, helping the country finish fourth in the overall standings.
Singh praised the athletes for their discipline, determination and commitment, highlighting the demanding preparation required to compete at the highest level. He also acknowledged the challenges of balancing military responsibilities with intensive training, physical recovery and time away from family.
Neeru Dhanda and Gulveer Singh Lead Standout Performances
Naib Subedar Neeru Dhanda emerged as one of the leading performers among the Services athletes, winning two gold medals and one silver. Her gold medal in the individual women’s trap event marked a historic achievement for Indian women’s shooting at the Asian Games.
Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh also produced an exceptional campaign, collecting two silver medals and one bronze. He became the first Indian male track-and-field athlete to win three individual medals at a single edition of the Asian Games.
In athletics, Havildar Sawan Barwal won silver in the men’s marathon with a national-record time of 2:11:37. His performance ended India’s 44-year wait for an Asian Games marathon medal.
Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare added another notable achievement by winning a medal in the men’s high jump, ending a 56-year gap since India's previous medal in the event.
Military Training System Receives Recognition
Singh highlighted the contribution of the Mission Olympic Wing, which supports the identification and development of sporting talent within the armed forces. Scientific training methods, modern facilities and specialised preparation have helped Services athletes compete successfully against international opponents.
He also recognised the work of coaches, physiotherapists, nutritionists and support personnel, noting that sporting success depends on coordinated efforts beyond the athletes themselves.
The Defence Minister reiterated the government's commitment to improving sports infrastructure, expanding access to modern training facilities and creating better opportunities for athletes. He encouraged those who did not win medals to continue working towards their goals, emphasising the value of perseverance and participation.
Focus Shifts to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028
Following the Asian Games success, attention is turning towards preparations for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Singh urged athletes, coaches and support staff to adopt a structured approach, set higher performance targets and maintain consistent preparation.
India finished the 2026 Asian Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals. The Services contingent contributed six of those gold medals and nearly one-third of the country's overall medal count.
The record haul underlines the growing contribution of the armed forces to Indian sport. With major international competitions ahead, the challenge will be to build on this performance and translate the momentum into further success on the Olympic stage.
