Nothing has begun releasing Nothing OS 5.0, its Android 17-based software update, with the Nothing Phone (3) becoming the first device to receive the stable version. The rollout began on October 12, bringing changes to the interface, personalisation options, performance and privacy controls.
The update follows the company's earlier beta programme and introduces a redesigned home screen alongside several features from Android 17. Other compatible Nothing and CMF smartphones are scheduled to receive the software in stages over the coming months, with availability varying by model and region.
For users waiting to upgrade, the main consideration is that the stable release is not arriving on every eligible phone simultaneously. The company has outlined a phased schedule extending into January 2027.
Nothing OS 5.0: What's New?
One of the most visible changes is a refreshed home screen, with updated icons, wallpaper-responsive colours and transparent widgets. The software also introduces new lock-screen clock designs, including Gooey and Micrographics, offering additional ways to personalise the phone's appearance.
The interface receives broader refinements through updated typography, redesigned elements in system applications and smoother animations. Users can also move multiple applications and widgets together while arranging the home screen, making larger layout changes easier.
Performance improvements are another part of the update. The software is designed to improve app launches, scrolling, touch response and multitasking. Memory management changes are intended to reduce unnecessary application reloads when switching between tasks.
The update also adds a dedicated interface for managing the phone's Glyph lighting features on compatible devices, bringing related controls into one place.
Android 17 Adds Privacy and Sharing Improvements
Nothing OS 5.0 incorporates several Android 17 features alongside its own interface changes.
Users can separate notifications from Quick Settings, giving each area its own dedicated space. The update also brings changes to file sharing, including options that make it easier to exchange files with nearby Android devices and share content with people using other platforms.
Privacy indicators and permission controls have been improved to make it easier to identify when applications access sensitive functions such as the camera, microphone or location.
Other additions include expanded Dark Theme support, updated screen-recording capabilities, Noto 3D emoji and a redesigned recent-apps screen. These changes complement the manufacturer's own software refinements rather than replacing the existing Android experience entirely.
Nothing OS 5.0 Update Schedule for Eligible Phones
The stable release is planned for a phased rollout across supported devices.
The Nothing Phone (3) is first in line, with the update beginning in October. The Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro and Phone (3a) are scheduled for early November.
The Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus are expected to follow in mid-November. The Phone (3a) Lite is listed for late December, while the Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro are scheduled for January 2027.
These are indicative timelines, not guaranteed arrival dates for every user. Regional requirements, carrier processes and the staged distribution can affect when an update appears on an individual device.
The Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 are not scheduled to receive Nothing OS 5.0, as they have reached the end of their major software-support period.
How to Check for the Android 17 Update
Owners of eligible phones can check availability by opening Settings, selecting System, and then choosing System Update. If the update has reached their device, the available installation option should appear there.
Users should back up important information before installing a major software update and ensure the phone has sufficient battery charge and storage space.
With Nothing OS 5.0, the company is combining Android 17's platform changes with a broader interface refresh. The staggered rollout means that owners of supported phones will need to check their device's schedule rather than expect every model to receive the update at once.
