A mechanical bird that sings and moves has become the centre of a public dispute involving American singer Kelly Clarkson and a specialty shop in Brooklyn, New York. The disagreement began after Clarkson said she felt dismissed by a store employee while asking about purchasing the decorative automaton, turning an ordinary shopping visit into a widely discussed social media controversy.
The object, known as Molly, is a wall-mounted singing bird displayed at Art of Play, a shop selling toys, games, curiosities and home accessories. Clarkson said she was interested in buying the piece and was quoted a price of $15,000. She later alleged that the interaction left her feeling as though staff had assumed she could not afford it.
The store disputed her account of the exchange, saying Molly was not available for purchase because the piece was part of its in-store displays and magic shows. The disagreement has since drawn widespread attention to the bird, its unusual price and the competing explanations of what happened during the visit.
Why Kelly Clarkson Took Issue With the Store
Clarkson described her experience publicly on social media after visiting the Brooklyn shop on October 10. She said she had gone there intending to purchase several items but felt that an employee treated her dismissively when she expressed interest in the mechanical bird.
She compared the experience to a scene from the film Pretty Woman, in which a shopper is treated poorly by sales staff. Her comments quickly attracted attention, with users debating whether the incident reflected poor customer service or a misunderstanding over the availability of the item.
Clarkson subsequently challenged the store’s explanation by sharing a photograph showing a $15,000 price tag near the bird. She maintained that the price had been displayed and criticised the way the interaction had been handled.
The dispute became a public back-and-forth, with both sides presenting different accounts of the conversation.
Store Says Molly Was Not for Sale
Art of Play responded by explaining that Molly was a distinctive mechanical artwork used as part of its in-store magic presentations. According to the shop, the displayed bird was attached to the wall and was not an item customers could simply purchase and take home.
The store said a similar bird created by Seattle-based artist Bliss Kolb was available for $15,000. It also said staff had offered to show Clarkson another singing bird, reportedly priced at around $2,000, but she left before seeing the alternative.
The explanation did not settle the disagreement. Clarkson rejected the store’s account and continued to maintain that her treatment had been disrespectful.
The shop’s co-owner, Adam Rubin, described the episode as a misunderstanding and said the business had attempted to address the matter directly. He also indicated that Clarkson would be welcome to visit again.
How a Mechanical Bird Became a Viral Story
Molly’s appeal lies in its unusual combination of decorative craftsmanship and mechanical movement. Unlike an ordinary bird figurine, an automaton is designed to create movement through an internal mechanism, often combining engineering with artistic detail.
Such pieces can attract collectors because of their specialised construction, limited availability and the work required to make them function. The bird’s reported $15,000 price therefore became a major part of the online discussion, alongside questions about whether the displayed object was actually available to buy.
As the controversy spread, the store reportedly raised Molly’s stated price to $15 million, an extraordinary increase that brought further attention to the object. The new figure appeared to be a response to the attention surrounding the dispute rather than an ordinary retail price adjustment.
Customer Service Debate Continues
The episode has prompted contrasting reactions. Some observers have focused on Clarkson’s allegation that she was treated unfairly, while others have questioned whether the dispute could have been resolved privately before becoming a public controversy.
For small businesses, a viral dispute involving a celebrity can generate substantial visibility but also bring intense scrutiny and unwanted online reactions. At the same time, customers expect clear communication about prices, availability and the treatment they receive in a store.
Neither side’s account independently settles every detail of the interaction. For now, the singing bird remains the unlikely focus of a dispute that has grown well beyond a single shopping visit, raising broader questions about customer service, celebrity influence and the speed at which online disagreements can escalate.
