Tripura Government Collects Over ₹52 Crore in Traffic Fines in Three Years

The Tripura government has collected over ₹52.04 crore in traffic fines across three financial years through strict e-challan and prosecution enforcement.

​AGARTALA — The Tripura government collected ₹52,04,71,825 in penalties from traffic law violations over the last three financial years (2023–24 to 2025–26). Chief Minister and Home Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha shared the data in the Tripura Legislative Assembly in response to queries raised by MLAs Nayan Sarkar and Shailendra Chandra Nath.

​The official figures highlight a consistent year-on-year rise in penalty collections, reflecting intensified road safety surveillance, automated e-challan integration, and tighter field enforcement across the state.

​Traffic enforcement revenue grew steadily over the three-year period:

Category-Wise Enforcement Highlights

​The Tripura Home Department relies on both physical Prosecution Reports (PRs) and automated e-challan systems to penalize violators under the Motor Vehicles Act.

​Key Breakdown for FY 2025–26:

• ​Drunk Driving: 1,276 Prosecution Reports registered, resulting in ₹12.90 lakh collected in fines.

• ​Vehicle Overloading: 4,547 PRs filed, yielding ₹1.29 crore in penalties.

• ​Over-Speeding: 2,700 PRs issued, generating ₹1.15 crore.

• ​Other Traffic Violations: 63,592 PRs and 41,637 digital e-challans issued, accounting for ₹16.29 crore.

​Sustained Momentum in 2026–27

​Enforcement drives have continued with equal intensity in the ongoing financial year. Between April 1 and July 31, authorities recorded:

• ​398 PRs for driving under the influence (₹4.86 lakh collected).

• ​1,701 PRs for commercial vehicle overloading (₹44.08 lakh collected).

• ​791 PRs for excessive speeding (₹31.18 lakh collected).

• ​23,965 PRs and 10,010 e-challans for other traffic non-compliance (₹5.18 crore collected).

​Combined collections spanning FY 2025–26 through July 31 stood at ₹24.85 crore.

​Modernizing Enforcement for Accident Reduction

​The state’s multi-pronged approach combines automated speed cameras, smart intersection surveillance, and on-ground mobile patrol units. Addressing the Assembly, the Chief Minister emphasized that strict penalty enforcement is designed to instill civic discipline, lower road accident rates, and improve overall commuter safety across Tripura’s highway and urban corridors.
