The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) appears to maintain a strong position in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with a recent statewide survey indicating substantial voter retention for the ruling party. According to the survey, 66.6% of respondents said they would vote for the NDA if elections were held now, while the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance received 26.4% support. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was backed by 5.4% of respondents.
BJP Maintains Strong Support Among Previous Voters
One of the survey’s key findings is that the BJP has retained approximately 91% of its previous voters. The figures suggest that the party continues to hold much of its existing support base despite changes in voter preferences and the political landscape since the last state and national elections.
The SP-Congress alliance also appears to have maintained a substantial share of its earlier supporters, with estimated voter retention ranging between 83% and 85%. The comparison indicates that both major political camps have retained much of their existing support, although the NDA holds a considerable lead in current voting preferences.
The survey also points to support from people who did not vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, suggesting that the BJP may be attracting some voters beyond its established base.
Survey Covers All 75 Districts
The survey was conducted between September 17 and October 2, 2026, and included 30,925 respondents across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Interviews were carried out door-to-door using computer-assisted personal interviewing.
The results offer a snapshot of voter sentiment several months before the state’s next Assembly election. However, the findings reflect respondents’ stated preferences at the time of the survey and do not guarantee the eventual election result. Campaign developments, candidate selection, alliances and local issues could influence voting intentions before polling takes place.
Yogi Adityanath Leads in Chief Minister Preference
The survey also indicates a strong preference for Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to continue in office. Around 66.2% of respondents identified him as their preferred choice for the next chief minister, compared with 24.4% who favoured Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.
On overall governance, 77.1% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the state government’s performance, while 13.5% said they were dissatisfied. These figures suggest that the administration retains a positive overall assessment among a large section of those surveyed.
Law and Order Remains a Key Electoral Factor
Law and order emerged as an important area of public assessment, receiving a satisfaction rating of around 74%. The issue is also central to voter priorities, with concerns about a possible return of the earlier period of criminal influence featuring prominently in the survey findings.
At the same time, the results indicate that economic concerns remain significant. Employment opportunities, inflation and questions surrounding examination paper leaks are among the issues that could affect the government’s standing, particularly among younger voters and economically vulnerable groups.
Employment was identified as a weaker area in the government’s performance assessment, highlighting a challenge for the ruling alliance despite its lead in overall voting preference.
Election Outlook Remains Open
The survey places the NDA comfortably ahead of its rivals in current voting intention, but the road to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election remains open. The opposition will seek to turn concerns about jobs, prices and examination irregularities into electoral support, while the BJP is likely to emphasise governance, law and order and its existing voter base.
The eventual outcome will depend on how political parties respond to these concerns, mobilise voters and manage alliances in the months ahead.
