India Women take on Zimbabwe Women in the opening T20 International of their three-match series in Raipur on Friday, October 16, with Smriti Mandhana beginning a new chapter as the Indian team’s full-time captain. The series offers India an opportunity to strengthen their T20 plans ahead of the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy scheduled for 2027.
The first match is being played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium. India and Zimbabwe are meeting in a bilateral women’s T20I series for the first time, adding a new contest to the international calendar.
Mandhana has taken over the captaincy from Harmanpreet Kaur, who stepped down from the leadership role earlier this month but remains part of the squad as a player. Shafali Verma has been named vice-captain.
Smriti Mandhana Takes Charge of India Women
Mandhana’s appointment comes after a successful period for Indian women’s cricket. The team recently won the Women’s Asia Cup T20 title and secured gold at the 2026 Asian Games, building momentum ahead of its next major international assignments.
The new captain has indicated that improving team standards will be a priority during her tenure. Areas such as power-hitting, fielding, training and recovery are expected to receive attention as India work towards becoming more consistent across formats.
The Zimbabwe series gives Mandhana an early opportunity to assess the team’s combinations and establish her approach to leadership. With three T20Is scheduled over five days, India will also have limited time between matches to make adjustments.
Harmanpreet’s continued presence in the squad provides experience during the transition. Meanwhile, Shafali’s appointment as deputy gives the leadership group another established player familiar with the demands of international T20 cricket.
India vs Zimbabwe: First T20I Details
The opening match is scheduled for Friday evening in Raipur. The second T20I will take place on October 18, followed by the third on October 20. All three matches will be played at the same venue.
India’s T20I squad features a mix of experienced international players and younger prospects. Alongside Mandhana, Harmanpreet and Shafali, the squad includes wicketkeepers Richa Ghosh and G Kamalini, all-rounder Deepti Sharma, and bowlers such as Sree Charani, Arundhati Reddy and Kranti Gaud.
The series is also an opportunity for players to strengthen their cases for future selection. Young members of the squad will be keen to make an impression, while established players will look to maintain their form and contribute to India’s preparations for upcoming competitions.
Zimbabwe Look to Challenge India
Zimbabwe arrive for the tour seeking valuable experience against one of the leading sides in women’s cricket. The visitors will be aiming to compete more consistently in the shortest format while testing themselves against India’s batting depth and bowling options.
Although India enter the series with considerable international experience, the team will need to execute its plans effectively rather than rely on reputation alone. Zimbabwe will have an opportunity to put pressure on the hosts if they make the most of key moments with both bat and ball.
The tour will continue with three One-Day Internationals in Vadodara on October 23, 25 and 28. The six-match schedule gives both teams an extended period of competition across the two formats.
For India, Friday’s opening T20I is about more than the result. It is the first step in Mandhana’s full-time captaincy tenure and an important chance to refine the team’s approach before the next major tournament cycle.
