Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has set a new benchmark in the business of Indian cricket after being acquired by a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group in a landmark deal valued at approximately $1.78 billion, or ₹16,660 crore. The transaction represents one of the biggest ownership deals in franchise cricket and highlights the growing commercial value of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The agreement covers the entire ownership of Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, the company responsible for operating RCB’s men’s team in the IPL and its women’s team in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). United Spirits Limited, which previously owned the franchise through its corporate structure, agreed to sell its entire stake to the investor consortium.
The transaction is an important development for the IPL, where franchise valuations have continued to rise alongside the league’s expanding audience, commercial partnerships and media revenues.
Who Is Behind the RCB Acquisition?
The buying consortium brings together four major business and investment groups: the Aditya Birla Group, The Times of India Group, Bolt Ventures and Blackstone’s perpetual private equity strategy, known as BXPE.
The combination brings together experience in business management, media, sports investment and financial markets. The consortium aims to build on RCB’s existing commercial strength while developing opportunities across cricket and the wider sports industry.
Under the proposed leadership structure, Aryaman Vikram Birla, a director at the Aditya Birla Group, is set to serve as RCB chairman. Satyan Gajwani of The Times of India Group is designated to become vice chairman.
The involvement of international investment firms also reflects the growing interest in Indian sports franchises among global investors. The IPL has developed into a major commercial property, attracting businesses that see opportunities in sponsorships, broadcasting, merchandise and fan engagement.
Why RCB Commands Such a High Valuation
RCB’s popularity has been supported by a strong fan base, prominent players and its long-standing presence in the IPL. The Bengaluru-based franchise was among the league’s original eight teams when the competition began in 2008.
For years, the team attracted considerable attention despite falling short of winning the men’s IPL title. That changed in 2025, when RCB secured its maiden championship, giving the franchise a major sporting milestone after 17 seasons.
The title added to the team’s commercial appeal, strengthening its position among India’s most recognisable cricket brands. Its association with star batter Virat Kohli has also helped it maintain a substantial following among cricket supporters.
RCB’s business interests extend beyond the men’s competition. Its participation in the WPL provides access to the rapidly developing women’s cricket market, creating additional opportunities for sponsorships, audience growth and brand partnerships.
The combined ownership of both teams makes the transaction broader than a conventional IPL franchise purchase.
What the Deal Means for the IPL
The record valuation underscores how franchise cricket has evolved from a sporting competition into a significant investment sector. Investors increasingly assess teams not only on their results but also on their commercial reach, media exposure, brand recognition and long-term revenue potential.
For existing IPL owners, a transaction of this size may influence expectations around franchise valuations and future investment. It also demonstrates the appeal of owning established teams with loyal supporters and access to multiple revenue streams.
United Spirits’ decision to exit the business is part of its effort to concentrate on its core operations, while the incoming consortium gains control of an established sports property.
The transaction remains subject to the relevant closing requirements and regulatory approvals announced alongside the agreement.
With a record-setting valuation, a championship-winning men’s team and an established presence in women’s cricket, RCB enters a new ownership era. The challenge for its investors will be to convert the franchise’s sporting success and popularity into sustainable long-term growth while preserving the connection with its supporters.
