Praveen Kumar Sets New Asian Para Games Record as India Clinches Gold and Silver in High Jump

Indian para-athlete Praveen Kumar delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, winning gold in the men’s high jump T44/64 event with a record-breaking clearance of 2.05 metres. His compatriot Banti secured silver with a personal-best jump of 1.92 metres, giving India a memorable one-two finish on October 21.

The result strengthened India’s para-athletics campaign and highlighted the country’s growing presence in international para-sports. Praveen successfully defended the title he had won at the previous Asian Para Games, adding another major achievement to his decorated career.

Record-Breaking Jump Secures Praveen’s Gold

Praveen cleared 2.05 metres to establish a new Asian Para Games record and finish ahead of the rest of the field. His performance surpassed the previous Games record of 1.95 metres.

The Indian athlete first cleared two metres before raising the bar further and successfully completing the 2.05-metre jump. His consistency during the competition helped him secure the top position and retain his continental title.

The victory was particularly significant because Praveen had faced health difficulties in the weeks leading up to the competition. He acknowledged that his preparation had been affected by illness and that he had initially been uncertain about his ability to defend the gold medal.

Despite those challenges, he delivered when it mattered most, demonstrating resilience and competitive determination on the international stage.

Banti Completes India’s One-Two Finish

Banti added to India’s success by winning silver with a clearance of 1.92 metres, which marked a personal best for the athlete.

His performance ensured that both the gold and silver medals went to India, underlining the strength of the country’s representation in the event.

The result also reflected the value of consistent preparation and competitive experience in para-athletics. Banti’s improvement to a personal-best height provided a significant milestone in his own sporting journey while contributing to India’s overall medal campaign.

The combined performance of the two athletes gave Indian supporters another reason to celebrate during a productive day for the national contingent.

Understanding the T44 and T64 Categories

The men’s high jump event brought together athletes from the T44 and T64 classifications. These categories cover different types of lower-limb impairments and are sometimes combined in competition to ensure a suitable field of competitors.

The T44 classification generally includes athletes with lower-limb impairments who compete without a prosthesis, while T64 includes athletes who compete with a lower-limb prosthesis.

Such classifications are an important part of para-sport because they help organise competition according to athletes’ functional and impairment-related characteristics. Combined events allow athletes from related categories to compete when appropriate under the sport’s classification rules.

Praveen competed as a T44 athlete, while the event brought together competitors from both classifications.

Praveen Continues His International Success

Praveen has established himself as one of India’s leading para-athletes. He won gold in the men’s high jump at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and has continued to compete successfully at major international events.

His latest Asian Para Games victory adds to that record and demonstrates his ability to deliver under pressure. His performance also provides an important boost to India’s ambitions in para-athletics, where athletes have continued to win medals across track and field disciplines.

The achievement is the result of years of training, technical development and competition at the highest level. High jump requires precise timing, speed, coordination and the ability to maintain composure during repeated attempts at increasing heights.

India Builds Momentum at Aichi-Nagoya

Praveen and Banti’s success formed part of a broader medal-winning effort by India at the Games. Indian athletes also made significant contributions in sprinting, shot put and other para-athletics events.

The high jump result demonstrated the country’s depth in the sport, with two Indian competitors occupying the top positions in the same event.

As competition continues in Aichi-Nagoya, India will aim to build on these performances and add further medals across disciplines. Praveen’s record-setting gold and Banti’s silver stand out as one of the highlights of the campaign, showcasing the determination and ability of India’s para-athletes on the continental stage.
