Temba Bavuma and Simon Harmer Create South African Test Cricket History With Record 183-Run Partnership

South African captain Temba Bavuma and all-rounder Simon Harmer produced a remarkable batting performance against Australia, establishing a new national record for the highest partnership for the eighth wicket in Test cricket. Their 183-run stand helped South Africa recover from a difficult position and take control of the second Test at St George's Park in Gqeberha.

The partnership came on October 20, 2026, during the third day of the match, when South Africa transformed an innings that appeared to be heading towards an early finish into a competitive total. Bavuma scored a career-best 179, while Harmer contributed 82, helping the hosts declare their first innings at 425 for nine.

South Africa Recover After Early Batting Trouble

South Africa resumed the third day at 97 for five after rain had disrupted the opening two days. The situation became more challenging when Wiaan Mulder was dismissed for 13, leaving the hosts struggling at 110 for six.

Australia had initially looked well placed to restrict South Africa to a modest total. However, Bavuma remained composed and continued building his innings, while the lower-order batters provided valuable support.

Marco Jansen joined Bavuma and helped shift the momentum through an aggressive approach. The pair added 132 runs for the seventh wicket, with Jansen scoring 85 from 100 deliveries. His innings included nine fours and three sixes.

The partnership gave South Africa a platform to rebuild and put pressure back on the Australian bowling attack. Jansen eventually departed after the stand had taken the hosts to 242 for seven.

Bavuma and Harmer Set a New National Record

Harmer arrived at the crease after Jansen's dismissal and partnered Bavuma for the remainder of the innings. Their 183-run stand surpassed South Africa's previous national record for an eighth-wicket partnership in Test cricket.

The previous record was a 150-run partnership shared by Neil McKenzie and Shaun Pollock against Sri Lanka at Centurion in 2001. Bavuma and Harmer's achievement therefore marked a significant milestone in the country's Test cricket history.

Bavuma provided stability at one end, while Harmer showed impressive composure and attacking ability. The off-spinner scored 82 runs, his highest Test score, and struck 10 fours and a six during his 91-ball innings.

Harmer was eventually bowled by Marnus Labuschagne. Bavuma was dismissed shortly afterwards for 179, caught behind by Alex Carey off Mitchell Starc.

South Africa declared at 425 for nine, securing a first-innings lead of 133 runs over Australia, who had scored 292 in their first innings.

Bavuma Delivers a Career-Best Performance

Bavuma's 179 was his highest individual score in Test cricket. He faced 334 deliveries and struck 18 fours and one six during an innings that lasted more than nine hours.

His performance was particularly important because South Africa had been under pressure from Australia's disciplined bowling during the early stages of the match.

Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the captain concentrated on preserving his wicket and gradually building partnerships. His contributions alongside Jansen and Harmer demonstrated how patience and effective lower-order support can change the direction of a Test match.

Australia Face Pressure in Their Second Innings

Australia's reply began under pressure after South Africa's declaration. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, returning to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury, dismissed opener Nic Maddinson for a duck.

Australia finished the day at three for one, still trailing South Africa by 422 runs. The visitors needed a strong batting performance to recover and avoid allowing the hosts to strengthen their position further.

Scott Boland was Australia's standout bowler during South Africa's first innings, taking five wickets for 81 runs. Starc claimed three wickets, but the home side's record-breaking partnerships ultimately shifted the balance of the contest.

A Significant Moment in South African Cricket

Bavuma and Harmer's partnership highlighted the importance of lower-order resistance in Test cricket. Their record stand, supported by Jansen's contribution, turned a difficult situation into an opportunity for South Africa to challenge Australia.

With the hosts declaring at 425 for nine and making an early breakthrough in Australia's second innings, the third day's play marked a major turnaround. The record partnership also added another memorable chapter to South Africa's Test cricket history.
