7 Easy Sweet Potato Recipes to Try at Home, From Spicy Chaat to Rich Halwa

Sweet potatoes, popularly known as shakarkandi in India, are a versatile ingredient that can be transformed into a variety of sweet and savoury dishes. Their naturally sweet flavour works well with Indian spices, tangy chutneys and traditional dessert ingredients, making them suitable for snacks, evening treats and homemade sweets.

Whether you prefer crispy bites or a warm dessert, sweet potatoes offer plenty of possibilities without requiring complicated ingredients. Here are seven easy recipes to try at home, ranging from street-food favourites to comforting homemade preparations.

1. Sweet Potato Chaat for a Tangy Snack

<text>Sweet potato chaat combines the natural sweetness of the vegetable with spices, lemon juice and fresh herbs. It is a popular choice for anyone looking for a quick, flavourful snack.</text>

To prepare it, boil or steam sweet potatoes until tender, then peel and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Toss them with chopped coriander, lemon juice, roasted cumin powder, black salt and chaat masala. Add chopped onion, green chilli or roasted peanuts for extra flavour and texture.

Serve immediately while the sweet potato pieces are still slightly warm. For a different version, lightly roast the pieces in a pan before adding the seasonings.

2. Crispy Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries provide a crunchy outside and a soft centre, making them a convenient homemade snack.

Wash and peel the sweet potatoes if desired, then cut them into evenly sized strips. Toss with a little oil, salt, black pepper and paprika or chilli powder. Arrange them in a single layer on a baking tray and bake at around 200°C until tender and golden, turning them halfway through.

They can also be prepared in an air fryer. Serve with mint yoghurt dip, tomato sauce or another preferred accompaniment.

For better crispness, avoid overcrowding the tray and cut the strips to a similar thickness so they cook evenly.

3. Traditional Sweet Potato Halwa

Sweet potato halwa is a warm dessert that combines the vegetable’s natural sweetness with the aroma of cardamom and ghee.

Start by boiling sweet potatoes until soft. Peel and mash them, then heat a little ghee in a pan and add the mashed mixture. Cook over a medium-low flame, stirring regularly until it becomes thicker and develops a richer flavour.

Add milk and sugar according to taste, then continue cooking until the mixture reaches a halwa-like consistency. Finish with cardamom powder and chopped almonds or cashews.

The dessert can be served warm, making it a comforting option for family gatherings and festive meals.

4. Sweet Potato Tikki

Sweet potato tikki is a simple savoury preparation that works well as an evening snack or starter.

Boil and mash sweet potatoes, then combine them with chopped coriander, cumin powder, chilli powder and salt. Add a small amount of cornflour or breadcrumbs if needed to help the mixture hold its shape.

Form the mixture into small, flat patties. Heat a little oil in a pan and cook the tikkis on both sides until golden and crisp.

Serve hot with green chutney or tamarind chutney. You can also top them with yoghurt and spices to create a chaat-style dish.

5. Sweet Potato Pakoras

Pakoras are a familiar Indian tea-time favourite, and sweet potato slices offer a slightly sweet variation.

Cut the sweet potatoes into thin rounds. Prepare a batter using gram flour, salt, turmeric, chilli powder and water, mixing until smooth. Dip each slice into the batter and fry in hot oil until cooked through and crisp.

Drain the pakoras before serving and pair them with coriander chutney or tomato sauce.

For an alternative cooking method, the coated slices can be baked or air-fried with a light coating of oil, although the texture may differ from traditional deep-fried pakoras.

6. Sweet Potato Kheer

Sweet potato kheer is a creamy dessert made by combining cooked sweet potatoes with milk, sugar and aromatic spices.

Boil the sweet potatoes, remove the skins and mash or grate them. Heat milk in a saucepan and add the prepared sweet potato, stirring gently to prevent lumps. Simmer until the mixture thickens slightly.

Add sugar to taste, along with cardamom powder and a few strands of saffron if available. Garnish with chopped nuts before serving.

The kheer can be enjoyed warm or chilled, depending on personal preference.

7. Sweet Potato Cutlets

Sweet potato cutlets are another easy way to turn leftover boiled sweet potatoes into a flavourful snack.

Mash the cooked sweet potatoes and mix them with finely chopped onion, coriander, cumin, garam masala and salt. Add breadcrumbs or a little flour if the mixture feels too soft.

Shape into small patties and coat lightly with breadcrumbs for a crisp exterior. Shallow-fry them in a pan until both sides turn golden.

Serve with mint chutney, tomato sauce or a simple salad. These cutlets can also be included in sandwiches or wraps.
