Teen Girls Are Vaping More Than Boys, New Study Reveals a Growing Public Health Concern

A new study has revealed a significant shift in vaping habits among teenagers in the United States, with adolescent girls now using e-cigarettes at higher rates than boys of the same age. The findings highlight an evolving public health challenge and raise questions about the factors influencing nicotine use among young people.

Researchers analysed a decade of data covering adolescents aged 12 to 17, examining how patterns of vaping and traditional cigarette smoking changed between 2014 and 2024. The results showed that the gender gap in vaping has changed considerably, with girls recording higher rates of regular e-cigarette use in recent years.

Girls Record Higher Vaping Rates Among Older Teenagers

The study found that regular vaping among girls aged 15 to 17 increased from 4.9% in 2021 to 7.8% in 2024. Among boys in the same age group, the corresponding rate stood at 4.6% in 2024.

Researchers noted that the difference between the two groups became more noticeable after 2021. This represents a major change from earlier years, when boys were generally more likely than girls to use vaping products.

The research also examined younger adolescents aged 12 to 14. Although vaping levels in this group remained comparatively lower and varied over time, girls generally reported higher rates than boys during the later years covered by the analysis.

The findings are based on established use rather than simply trying an e-cigarette once. Participants had to report regular use within the previous 30 days, allowing researchers to focus on teenagers who were actively vaping.

A Decade of Changing Nicotine Habits

The research tracked nicotine use from 2014 through 2024, covering the period when e-cigarettes became increasingly popular among young people.

During the earlier years, vaping was more common among boys. The difference narrowed during the sharp increase in youth vaping in 2018 and 2019, before the pattern shifted in subsequent years.

The emergence of newer vaping devices during that period coincided with the rapid rise in teenage use. Products featuring discreet designs and nicotine-salt formulations became more prominent, contributing to concerns about how easily young people could use e-cigarettes.

However, the study was not designed to establish why girls' vaping rates increased relative to boys. Researchers said further investigation is needed to understand the potential influence of marketing, social pressures, perceptions of risk and other behavioural factors.

Traditional Cigarette Smoking Has Declined

The findings also revealed a positive development in another area of nicotine use. Regular traditional cigarette smoking among adolescents has fallen substantially over the past decade.

By 2024, established cigarette smoking had dropped to approximately 0.2% among teenagers overall, with rates remaining below half a per cent for both boys and girls.

Researchers described the decline as an important public health achievement. However, the growing use of e-cigarettes presents a different challenge for prevention programmes and health professionals.

Although vaping exposes users to fewer certain harmful substances than combustible cigarettes, it is not harmless, particularly for adolescents who might otherwise avoid nicotine altogether.

Why Teenage Vaping Remains a Health Concern

Nicotine can cause dependence and may affect the developing adolescent brain. Regular vaping can also make it difficult for young users to recognise how frequently they are consuming nicotine, particularly when devices can be used repeatedly throughout the day.

The long-term health consequences of newer vaping products are still being investigated. Researchers therefore emphasise the importance of preventing nicotine use among young people rather than assuming that e-cigarettes are safe.

The latest findings also underline the need for prevention efforts that reach both girls and boys. While the higher rates among girls require attention, vaping among boys remains a significant concern.

Researchers Call for Better Prevention Strategies

The study highlights the importance of understanding how teenage behaviour changes over time. Public health experts say future research should investigate why girls have become more likely to vape and identify approaches that can reduce regular nicotine use.

Parents, schools and healthcare professionals can contribute by providing accurate information about nicotine dependence and the potential health effects of vaping. Open conversations and early support may also help young people make informed decisions.

Ultimately, the findings show that youth vaping remains an evolving public health issue. Addressing it will require continued research, effective prevention programmes and awareness of changing patterns among adolescents.
