Varanasi Prepares for Major Air Show as PM Modi Plans to Join Yogi Adityanath at Namo Ghat

Varanasi is preparing to host a major Indian Air Force aerial display over the Ganga, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend the main event alongside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on October 25, 2026. The programme is part of celebrations marking the Indian Air Force’s 94th anniversary and is expected to draw large crowds to the city’s famous riverfront.

The event, titled Wings Over Ganges, will combine military aviation displays with the historic landscape of Varanasi. Preparations are underway at Namo Ghat and surrounding areas, with officials coordinating security, transport and crowd management arrangements.

Fighter Jets and Aerobatic Teams to Feature

The aerial display is expected to feature prominent Indian Air Force aircraft, including Rafale, Sukhoi and Tejas fighter jets. Helicopters, transport aircraft and specialist aerobatic teams are also expected to take part in the wider programme.

One of the key attractions will be the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team, which flies nine Hawk Mk 132 aircraft. Its display is designed to demonstrate precision, coordination and advanced flying skills through carefully executed formations and manoeuvres.

The Sarang helicopter display team is also expected to add to the spectacle. Together, the performances are intended to give spectators an opportunity to witness the capabilities and professionalism of the Indian Air Force.

The programme is scheduled across multiple dates, with major displays planned for October 22, 24 and 25. The October 25 event is expected to receive particular attention because of the anticipated participation of the Prime Minister.

Administration Strengthens Security and Crowd Management

The expected arrival of senior political leaders and the possibility of large public gatherings have prompted extensive preparations by local authorities. Officials are working on security deployment, traffic diversions, parking facilities, emergency response arrangements and access routes for spectators.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reviewed preparations and stressed the need for coordinated planning among the police, district administration and other departments. Officials have also been asked to ensure that visitors can reach viewing areas safely and that emergency services remain ready throughout the event.

Authorities have declared a temporary restricted airspace zone within a five-kilometre radius of Namo Ghat. Drone operations and other unmanned aircraft are prohibited within the designated area as part of the security measures surrounding the programme.

The restrictions are intended to protect the event venue and maintain safe conditions during the aerial performances.

Ganga Riverfront Offers a Distinctive Setting

Holding the air show in Varanasi gives the event a setting different from a conventional airfield display. The Ganga, the city’s historic ghats and its cultural significance are expected to provide a distinctive backdrop for the aircraft formations.

Organisers and local officials are also preparing for spectators who may gather at nearby ghats and other locations along the river. Crowd movement, transport arrangements and coordination between different agencies will be important to managing the expected turnout.

The event could also bring increased attention to Varanasi as a destination for visitors interested in aviation and cultural tourism.

A Public Showcase of India’s Aviation Capabilities

The air show forms part of the Indian Air Force’s anniversary programme and aims to bring its work closer to the public. Such displays provide an opportunity to showcase aircraft, flying expertise, teamwork and the discipline required for complex aerial operations.

With Narendra Modi expected to attend the main programme alongside Yogi Adityanath, the October 25 display is likely to be the central occasion of the celebrations in Varanasi.

As the event approaches, authorities are focusing on completing arrangements for security, traffic and public access. The success of the programme will depend not only on the aerial performances but also on ensuring that spectators can watch safely and that normal movement across the city is managed effectively.
