Petrol and Diesel Prices Today, October 20, 2026: Check Fuel Rates in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai

Petrol and diesel prices remained largely unchanged across India's major cities on October 20, 2026, providing little immediate relief to motorists despite fluctuations in international crude oil markets. Fuel rates continued to vary between cities because of differences in state taxes, transportation expenses and other local charges.

With crude oil prices remaining elevated amid geopolitical uncertainty and concerns over global energy supplies, consumers are closely monitoring fuel costs. For households and businesses that depend on road transport, stable retail prices provide some predictability in daily expenses.

Petrol and Diesel Prices in Major Cities

The following are the reported retail fuel prices in four major Indian metropolitan cities on October 20, 2026.

Prices may vary slightly by locality and fuel outlet. Motorists should check the latest rate applicable to their area before refuelling.

Why Do Fuel Prices Differ Across Cities?

Petrol and diesel prices are influenced by several factors, including international crude oil prices, the rupee's exchange rate against the US dollar, refining expenses, transportation costs and government taxes.

India imports a substantial share of the crude oil it consumes. As a result, changes in international oil prices and currency movements can affect the cost of importing fuel.

However, a fall in crude oil prices does not necessarily lead to an immediate reduction at petrol pumps. Oil marketing companies must also account for procurement costs, refining margins, distribution expenses and other financial considerations.

Differences in state-level taxes are another important reason why motorists in different cities pay different amounts for the same quantity of fuel.

What Is Happening in the Global Oil Market?

International crude oil markets have remained sensitive to geopolitical developments, particularly concerns about energy supplies and shipping routes in West Asia.

On October 20, Brent crude futures were reported at around $109.69 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude traded near $100.88 per barrel. These figures reflected continued uncertainty in global oil markets.

Any prolonged disruption to oil production or transportation could increase supply concerns and place upward pressure on prices. Conversely, improved supply availability or weaker global demand could ease some of that pressure.

For India, the effect on domestic fuel prices will depend on international crude benchmarks, currency movements and decisions by oil marketing companies.

How Fuel Prices Affect Household Budgets

Petrol and diesel costs influence more than personal vehicle expenses. Diesel is widely used in freight transportation, agriculture and several industrial activities. Changes in its price can therefore affect the cost of moving goods and operating machinery.

Higher transportation expenses can place additional pressure on businesses and may eventually contribute to higher prices for some consumer products.

For commuters, even when retail fuel prices remain unchanged, overall travel expenses can fluctuate depending on driving distance, traffic conditions and vehicle fuel efficiency.

How to Check the Latest Petrol and Diesel Rates

Consumers can check local fuel prices through authorised oil marketing company services and official fuel-price information channels. Since retail rates can change, checking the applicable price before refuelling is useful, particularly when travelling between cities.

It is also important to distinguish between international crude oil prices and the retail price displayed at a petrol pump. The two are connected, but they do not move in exactly the same way or at the same time.

Conclusion

Petrol and diesel prices remained broadly stable across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai on October 20, 2026. Delhi continued to have lower reported petrol and diesel prices than the other three major metropolitan cities listed above, while Kolkata recorded the highest petrol rate among them.

Global crude oil movements, currency fluctuations and domestic taxation will remain important factors influencing future fuel prices. For now, motorists should monitor local rates and account for fuel expenses when planning their travel and household budgets.
