Indian Para Swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh Sent Back From Japan After Misconduct Allegations

Indian para swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh has been sent back to India from Japan following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female hotel employee during the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya. The incident has prompted the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to consider strict disciplinary action, including a possible lifetime ban against the athlete.

Shaikh was reportedly questioned by Japanese police after a complaint was raised about his alleged behaviour at the hotel where the Indian para-swimming contingent was staying. He left Japan before competing in his scheduled events, dealing a setback to his participation in the ongoing international competition.

The allegations have also raised concerns about the conduct expected of athletes representing India at major international sporting events. However, the proposed disciplinary action has not yet been finalised, and the allegations should be distinguished from any final legal or disciplinary determination.

What Happened at the Team Hotel in Nagoya?

According to reports, the incident occurred on October 19 at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Nagoya, where members of India's para-swimming team were staying during the Games.

A female housekeeping employee was reportedly attending to her duties when Shaikh allegedly behaved inappropriately towards her. The employee is said to have left the room and reported the incident to her superiors, after which hotel management and Japanese police became involved.

Members of the Indian delegation were subsequently informed about the complaint and reached the hotel. Japanese police questioned Shaikh as part of their response to the allegations.

The incident led to discussions involving the Indian delegation, hotel representatives and the local organising authorities. Shaikh was later sent back to India, missing his scheduled swimming events.

The precise legal outcome of the complaint in Japan has not been publicly established in the available reporting.

PCI Considers Strict Disciplinary Action

The Paralympic Committee of India is considering severe action against Shaikh in response to the allegations. The delegation's chef-de-mission has reportedly recommended a lifetime ban, although a final decision is expected after the matter is reviewed by the relevant authorities.

The committee is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, consult officials involved in handling the complaint and consider the applicable disciplinary rules.

The proposed action could also involve discussions with the Sports Ministry and the Sports Authority of India. Any formal sanction will depend on the outcome of the review and the procedures followed by the responsible bodies.

The case has placed the conduct of athletes at international competitions under renewed scrutiny, particularly regarding their responsibilities towards event staff and members of the public.

Who Is Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh?

Shaikh, who comes from Madhubani district in Bihar and lives in Mumbai, has represented India in para swimming at international competitions.

He previously achieved a world No. 1 ranking in the men's 100-metre butterfly in the S5 classification and the 50-metre breaststroke in the SB4 classification, according to international para-swimming records.

He also competed at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta. In 2025, he won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke at the Reykjavik International Games, setting Indian and Asian records.

His sporting achievements had made him an experienced member of India's para-swimming community. His departure from the current Games means he will be unable to pursue the results he had hoped to achieve in Japan.

Incident Raises Concerns for India's Sporting Delegation

The controversy has emerged while Indian athletes are competing across multiple disciplines at the Asian Para Games. The delegation must now address the fallout from the allegations while continuing its sporting campaign.

The incident has also renewed discussion about athlete conduct, institutional accountability and the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of people working at sporting venues.

For the PCI, the immediate priority will be to establish the facts and determine an appropriate response under its disciplinary framework.

Final Decision Still Awaited

Shaikh's return to India and the recommendation for a possible lifetime ban represent major developments in the case, but the final disciplinary outcome remains pending.

The PCI is expected to review the incident after the Games, with further action depending on the findings and the applicable rules. The handling of the complaint by the relevant authorities will determine the next steps in a case that has brought unwanted attention to India's para-sport contingent.
