India’s men’s cricket team secured another Asian Games gold medal after defeating Pakistan by 19 runs in a closely contested final in Nagoya. Reflecting on the victory, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson stressed that the championship was the result of sustained effort rather than an easy route to the title.
India posted 211 for six after being asked to bat first. Abhishek Sharma provided the early momentum with a half-century, while Tilak Varma produced a powerful late-innings contribution to take India beyond the 200-run mark. Pakistan responded strongly during its chase, ensuring the contest remained competitive deep into the second innings.
Pakistan eventually finished on 192 for six, giving India a 19-run victory and a second consecutive men’s cricket gold at the Asian Games. The result also completed a memorable cricket campaign for India, with the women’s team having earlier won gold as well.
Samson highlighted the value of experience in India's squad, particularly in a final carrying the added pressure of an India-Pakistan contest. According to the wicketkeeper-batter, the presence of established players helped the side remain composed and focused despite interruptions to the tournament schedule and limited opportunities to practise and play regularly.
The decision to send a strong, senior group of T20 players also proved valuable when the tournament reached its most important stage. Samson said the experienced squad was able to handle the occasion effectively and adapt to the demands of the match rather than becoming distracted by the significance of the final.
The game itself provided little room for complacency. India’s total gave the bowlers a substantial target to defend, but Pakistan's batters took advantage of a favourable batting surface and kept the chase alive. India eventually managed the pressure and closed out the match to retain its continental title.
For Samson, the nature of the final made the medal particularly satisfying. Rather than treating the Asian Games title as an expected outcome, he pointed to the work required from the team throughout the campaign and the challenge posed by Pakistan in the decisive match.
The victory also underlined India's growing strength in T20 cricket. With experienced international players available alongside emerging talent, the team was able to combine attacking batting with the composure required during the closing stages of a high-pressure final.
India’s latest success means the country has now retained the men's Asian Games cricket title, following its gold-medal triumph at the previous edition. The 2026 final also added another chapter to the long-running India-Pakistan sporting rivalry, with the Asian Games title decided in a competitive contest rather than a one-sided encounter.
For the Indian squad, the gold medal represents both a successful title defence and evidence of how experience can become especially valuable when a major tournament reaches its most demanding stage.
