Microsoft Withdraws From UK Data Centre Deal With Nscale Amid Power Supply Delays

Microsoft has withdrawn from an agreement with British artificial intelligence infrastructure company Nscale for a data centre project in Loughton, Essex, according to reports published on October 18, 2026. The decision comes after repeated delays surrounding the development, with electricity supply constraints reportedly threatening to postpone the facility’s connection to the national grid until the 2030s.

The development represents a setback for a project intended to support the growing demand for computing capacity needed to train and operate artificial intelligence models. Microsoft was expected to be a major customer for the facility, making its withdrawal an important development for Nscale as the company pursues further expansion and prepares for a potential public listing in the United States.

The precise reason for Microsoft's decision has not been officially disclosed by the company. However, reported delays and uncertainty over the site's electricity supply have emerged as significant concerns surrounding the project.

Power Supply Delays Create Challenges for the Project

The Loughton data centre has reportedly faced repeated development delays. According to reports, officials responsible for the national electricity grid indicated that the site might not receive the necessary power connection until the 2030s.

Reliable electricity is essential for large-scale AI data centres, which require substantial computing power to operate advanced processors and maintain continuous services. Delays in securing sufficient electricity can prevent facilities from becoming operational on schedule, even when other parts of the development are progressing.

The situation highlights a broader challenge facing the AI infrastructure industry: expanding computing capacity requires not only investment in servers and facilities but also access to dependable energy supplies and suitable grid connections.

For companies planning large data centre projects, uncertainty around electricity availability can affect construction schedules, customer commitments and the timing of expected revenue.

Nscale Says Its Relationship With Microsoft Remains Strong

Despite the reported termination of the agreement for the Loughton site, Nscale has emphasised that its broader relationship with Microsoft remains strong and long-term.

A company spokesperson said the electricity grid issue affecting the London area would not affect its other contracts. Nscale also reiterated its commitment to the Loughton project and the UK market.

The company is exploring alternative power sources for the Essex facility, while continuing to consider other locations for expansion across the country.

These efforts could help Nscale address the immediate infrastructure challenge, although the feasibility, cost and timing of alternative power arrangements remain important factors.

Microsoft declined to comment on the reported withdrawal when approached about the development.

Why the Deal Matters for Nscale

Nscale provides computing infrastructure, power solutions, data centres and software used to train and operate AI models. The company is backed by Nvidia and competes with other specialised AI infrastructure providers, including CoreWeave, Nebius, Crusoe and Lambda.

Demand for such services has increased as technology companies invest in advanced AI systems that require large amounts of computing capacity. Infrastructure providers seek to secure long-term customer contracts to support investment in facilities, hardware and energy.

Nscale has expanded rapidly, with its total contracted value reportedly growing from $100 million to more than $103 billion in approximately two and a half years. However, contracted value is not the same as revenue already earned, and the ability to deliver projects on time remains critical to turning commitments into operating business.

The loss of the Loughton agreement could therefore raise questions about project execution and customer concentration, even as Nscale continues to pursue other contracts.

IPO Plans Face Greater Investor Scrutiny

Nscale filed for an initial public offering in the United States in September 2026. Its prospectus identified Microsoft and AI company Anthropic as expected major customers.

The reported withdrawal from the Essex project could attract additional scrutiny from prospective investors evaluating the company's contracts, infrastructure requirements and ability to meet delivery schedules.

Investors in AI infrastructure businesses are increasingly assessing whether rapid growth can translate into sustainable revenue and returns, particularly when projects require significant upfront spending.

Nscale's ability to secure alternative power arrangements and maintain its other customer commitments may consequently become important considerations as it advances its listing plans.

What Happens Next?

Nscale says it remains committed to the UK and is investigating alternative power sources for the Loughton site, alongside additional expansion opportunities.

The project's future will depend on whether the company can resolve its electricity supply challenges and establish a viable development timeline. More broadly, the episode underscores how energy infrastructure can become a critical constraint on the expansion of AI computing.

As demand for AI services grows, access to power, reliable construction schedules and the ability to fulfil customer commitments are likely to remain central to the success of data centre operators.
