Gym Memberships Now Carry 5% GST. Many Owners Still Need to Fix Their Invoices
The rate cut was simple on paper; for small gyms that bill by hand, getting every invoice right has been harder

When the GST rate for gym services changed in September 2025, most owners heard the headline: 5% instead of 18%. Fewer heard the second half. The new rate comes without input tax credit, and the old option of 18% with credit has gone. For thousands of small gyms that bill by hand, getting every invoice right has been the harder job.
What Exactly Changed
From 22 September 2025, gym, fitness centre and yoga services are taxed at 5% GST without input tax credit. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has clarified that the earlier 18% option with credit is no longer available. Invoices dated before the change keep the old rate.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A member who paid half an annual fee in August and the rest in October has two payments, and two rates, on one membership.
Where Small Gyms Are Getting It Wrong
The common mistakes are simple ones. Some gyms apply one rate to a whole plan that crosses the change date. Others still use printed receipt books showing 18%, work out tax only on the final part payment, or continue claiming input tax credit on gym services. Cash collected at the counter often gets no invoice at all.
None of this is unusual. Most Indian gyms are small, owner-run businesses. In Mumbai, Rentech Digital’s listing data shows 92.69% of gyms are single-owner. There is rarely an accountant on staff, and the person who collects the fee may be training members an hour later.
Why a Rate History Matters
The cleanest way to handle a rate change is to never overwrite the old rate. Each invoice should keep the rate that applied on its date, while new invoices use the new one. That is easy in a well-built system and hard in a spreadsheet, where one formula change can quietly rewrite last year’s numbers.
Indian gym platforms have started to build for this. Torzil, a gym management platform founded in India in 2024, lets gyms set custom GST rates and keeps a rate history, so older invoices stay as they were. Its GST billing tools include tax breakups, GSTIN on invoices and a GST report for filing.
Clean invoices also make the month easier to read. When every payment is recorded with its tax, an owner can see revenue, expenses and the net result in one place, and hand the same numbers to their accountant.
A Simple Checklist for Owners
Update the GST rate in your billing system or invoice template to 5%. Retire old receipt books that print 18%. Check open part payments and renewals that cross 22 September 2025. Stop claiming input tax credit on gym services unless your chartered accountant advises otherwise, and keep a monthly GST report ready for filing.
The rate cut makes memberships slightly cheaper for members. Clean invoices make sure the gym does not lose that benefit to penalties later.
