A stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening, October 17, left 17 people dead and at least 15 injured, after heavy crowds gathered amid rainy conditions. The incident occurred at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in the Girish Park police station area, raising concerns over crowd management, lighting and the safety of entry and exit routes.
Police said the stampede broke out at approximately 7:40 pm near the pandal’s exit gate. The combination of a large number of visitors, rain and restricted movement around the gates contributed to the dangerous situation. Authorities moved injured people to Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Narrow Gates and Poor Lighting Raise Safety Concerns
Accounts from people at the venue pointed to difficulties moving through the crowded area. One visitor’s family member said the entrance and exit were both narrow and that the area lacked adequate lighting. According to his account, visitors had waited in a queue for around an hour and a half, while the rain added to the urgency among people trying to enter.
He also described how people fell amid the congestion, leaving others frightened and struggling to move. His account raised questions about whether sufficient arrangements had been made to manage the crowd and keep the access routes clear.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to further investigation. The precise sequence of events, including what triggered the sudden movement of people, will be important in establishing how the crowd surge developed.
Announcement May Have Triggered Sudden Rush
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who visited Medical College and Hospital after the incident, said an announcement made by the puja organisers may have contributed to the rush. His remarks suggested that the announcement could have prompted visitors to move suddenly, although the full circumstances had not yet been established.
Police said emergency assistance was deployed following the stampede. Personnel from the control room, fire brigade and Disaster Management Group, along with ambulances and medical teams, were sent to the site. Officials said injured people were rescued and transported for medical care.
The pandal was subsequently closed to visitors as emergency operations continued. Police also reported that around 35 people had been taken to the hospital, while further details were awaited.
Prime Minister Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the deaths and extended condolences to the affected families. He announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the family of each person who died in the incident. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery and said the local administration was providing assistance.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who arrived in Kolkata on Saturday evening, also expressed sorrow over the tragedy. He said he would postpone his scheduled programmes in West Bengal on Sunday to visit injured people at the hospital.
Abhishek Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress MP, criticised the police and the state government following the incident. His response added to the political scrutiny surrounding the handling of crowd safety at the venue.
Crowd Management Under Scrutiny
The deaths have brought attention to the arrangements required at major public celebrations, particularly when large crowds gather in confined spaces during adverse weather. Narrow access points, insufficient lighting and sudden changes in crowd movement can create serious risks when people have limited room to move.
The immediate priority remains medical care for the injured and support for bereaved families. Further clarification about the announcement, crowd-control arrangements and the conditions at the pandal will be necessary to establish the factors that led to the tragedy.
The incident has left questions about safety planning at crowded festival venues, including whether access routes, lighting and emergency arrangements were adequate for the number of visitors present.
