Parakala Prabhakar to Join CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke and Prakash Raj in Nationwide Anti-SIR Protest

Economist and political commentator Parakala Prabhakar, husband of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is set to participate in a nationwide protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls on October 23, 2026. The demonstration, organised by the People Against SIR alliance, will bring together activists, lawyers, public figures and representatives of various social groups.

Prabhakar is expected to share the stage with Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and actor-activist Prakash Raj. The protest organisers are demanding the cancellation of the electoral roll revision exercise and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The planned demonstration comes amid an ongoing political debate over voter-list revisions, the deletion of names from electoral rolls and the protection of eligible citizens' voting rights.

Nationwide March Planned for October 23

The protest, titled the People's March to Restore Democracy, is scheduled for Friday, October 23. The alliance has called on citizens from different backgrounds to participate, including students, farmers, workers, women and representatives of marginalised communities.

Prabhakar announced his planned participation through a public message promoting the march under the slogan, “Har gali me Jantar Mantar.” The phrase expresses the organisers' ambition to encourage public demonstrations and civic participation across the country.

Other prominent individuals expected to participate include senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, farmer leader Rakesh Tikait, All India Students' Association president Neha Bora and author Tushar Gandhi.

The alliance has also appealed to parties in the INDIA opposition bloc to join the demonstrations. However, the participation of all invited political parties had not been confirmed at the time of the announcement.

Why Protesters Oppose the SIR Exercise

The Special Intensive Revision is an exercise intended to verify and update electoral rolls. The process has become controversial, with critics arguing that it could result in eligible voters being removed from electoral lists.

Protest organisers have called for the exercise to be scrapped and for the restoration of names they believe were wrongly deleted. They have also demanded accountability from the Election Commission and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revisions are intended to improve the accuracy of voter lists. It has also stated that eligible individuals whose names have been removed can pursue the prescribed process to have their names included again.

The disagreement has prompted demonstrations and political debate over how electoral rolls should be updated while ensuring that eligible citizens retain their voting rights.

Parakala Prabhakar's Criticism of Government Policies

Prabhakar is known for his commentary on India's economy, public policy and democratic institutions. Although his wife has a prominent position in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, he has publicly criticised several government decisions.

In his book, The Crooked Timber of New India, Prabhakar examined issues including demonetisation, unemployment and concerns about the functioning of democratic institutions.

His participation in the October 23 demonstration adds another prominent voice to the campaign against the electoral roll revision exercise. He had also participated in an earlier CJP protest at Bengaluru's Freedom Park on October 8, alongside public figures including Prakash Raj.

CJP and the Wider Protest Movement

The Cockroach Janta Party has emerged as one of the groups leading demonstrations over the SIR exercise and restrictions on public protests. Its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, has called for greater public participation in efforts to challenge decisions that protesters believe threaten electoral accountability.

The movement has attracted activists, students and public figures who want election authorities to address concerns about voter-list changes. Its demonstrations have also raised questions about access to designated protest locations and the conditions under which citizens can assemble peacefully.

The planned march represents an effort to broaden the campaign beyond individual organisations by bringing together people from different professional, political and social backgrounds.

What to Expect From the October 23 Demonstration

The upcoming march is expected to focus on demands for the cancellation of the SIR exercise, restoration of allegedly wrongfully deleted voter names and the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The extent of participation and the response from political parties and election authorities remain to be seen. The demonstration is likely to keep the debate over electoral transparency, voter registration and democratic accountability in public focus.

As the protest approaches, its organisers are seeking wider participation in what they describe as a campaign to protect democratic rights. The central issue remains how electoral rolls can be revised accurately while ensuring that every eligible voter has a fair opportunity to exercise their right.
